Independently of Notre Dame, I did, unknowingly, trip over another French artist who called himself Plastic Bertrand, back in the day. During an episode of the Lone Gunmen (the X-Files spin off), the boys were putting Frohike through hell to get him into a disguise so he could go under cover as the son of an elderly German woman. The song was contagious! It was called "Ca Plane Pour Moi", and when I looked it up, I found Plastic Bertrand. He's kind of punk mixed with beach/50's music. I only liked two of the songs I heard. "Ca Plane Pour Moi", and "Mechant Petard". Bertrand was doing his thing in the late 70's, and to hear "Ca Plane Pour Moi", go here! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Km2qrc9nqCg&search=ca%20plane%20pour%20moi

Then, of course, I checked out the music done by "Notre Dam de Paris" leading lady, Helene Segara http://www.helenesegara.net/main.htm Though all of her music is sung beautifully...well, I just like the male singing voice better than the female singing voice. But I can guarantee it's all very good and worthy of you taking the time to check her out! She is, of course, mostly adult contemporary...like Celine Dion. I did obtain three of her songs, however. A magnificent duet with Pelletier, in fact, called "Vivo per Lei". Also, her single "Sempre, Sempre". And the last piece I collected is another beautiful duet...this time with Garou...called "L'amour Existe Encore".
Between myself and my very enthusiastic Garou fan friend, we started looking elsewhere for video material, and learned that Garou participates each year in a traveling gala show in France called "Les Enfoires" http://www.enfoires.fr/ (loosely translated as "The Idiots") It's a multi-artist effort to raise money for food to feed the hungry each year. It's called The Idiots because the big attraction is that it comes off like a variety show, with a lot of humor and silliness. It's been a yearly event in France for the past 20 years, and Garou has been participating since his days in Notre Dame de Paris. And as it turns out...David Hallyday is also a participant! So, we saw no reason to not try and obtain a few copies.
They are quite delightful, and it gave us a chance not only to see more Hallyday and Garou, but also to see new artists and hear new songs!
Gerald de Palmas http://depalmas.artistes.universalmusic.fr/ has what I have to believe is the absolute coolest French rock song, EVER. I mean EVER. It's called "J'en Reve Encore", and it's very laid back and just plain damn cool. I mean...like America or Zepplin cool. If you download no other song but this out of all the musical suggestions I've made, then I'll be happy. Trust me...do it. I just wish I could upload a copy for you to listen to right here!
A one-hit artist I found was a guy named Curt Close...and the only reason I found him was because he's a Garou sound-alike, and one of his songs was mislabeled as having been done by Garou. The song is "Ton Image", and it's very powerfully emotional. Adult contemporary. Well worth a listen.
There is also a completely delightful song out there by a young female pop artist, simply named Marilou. The song is a duet with Garou, called "Tu Es Comme Ca". It's very catchy, and you'll love it if you hear it. I love singing along with it, and if it weren't in French, it would undoubtedly be in the American top 40, today. To hear the song (and actually see the music video) go to this web site, http://www.mariloumusique.com/actualites.cgi click "photos et videos" on the page that loads, there will be 4 thumbnails in the section that says "videos". For the one on the top, left...click "haut debit". Now...just watch and listen to this very fun song!
And that's about it! The end...so far...of the French revolution. LOL Sorry...couldn't resist! PLEASE check out these artists...download and listen to these songs...then come back and tell me what you think! I wish I could make sample CDs for each and every one of you, but that would be...well, illegal is what it would be first. But very, very tedious and difficult is what it would also be. So save me the trouble and the questionable legalities and find this stuff if you're hungry for new...and very good...music!
