MY WRITER'S BIOGRAPHY
Vickie Holt was first published in May of 1993, under the name Vickie Murphy (her married name, at the time). Her short story, “Windkin”, was bought by WaRP Graphics, adapted to comic format, and published as a 1-issue short that appeared as issue #5 of the Elf Quest: New Blood comic series. WaRP Graphics also bought and adapted Vickie’s short story, “Rock Shaper”, and published it one month later as part of the Elf Quest: New Blood ’93 Summer Special. “Windkin” was then re-released in the first New Blood Graphic Novel.
In 1995, New Dominions invited Vickie to submit a short story, “The Fire Child”, which was published in that year’s volume. Also in 1995, Vickie’s articles and editorials became a regular feature of Roanoke Regional magazine, Collage. Her work appeared monthly in this magazine from November of 1995, till the magazine’s final issue in December of 1997. Her editorials often sported the subtitle, “Murphy’s Law”.
Also in 1997, Vickie’s short story, “Of Cabbages and Queens” was another piece published by invitation. It appeared in the Summer 1997 volume of Powerstar magazine. In 1998, Vickie created a small chap book, “The Epitaph of Never-Laugh. . . and Other Whimsically Dark Musings”, which contained selections of poetry, an editorial, and an excerpt from her novel.
1998 also saw Vickie’s return to the Elf Quest stable. She was invited by Elf Quest co-creator, Richard Pini, to take up the reigns of a newly-begun storyline called WaveDancers. Vickie was no longer writing short stories for WaRP Graphics to adapt, but was actively writing for comic format, as well as directing the art creation for her work. Successive installments of this storyline appeared in issues 21, 23, 24, 27, 28, 30 and 31 of the Elf Quest comic series, between February and December of 1998. In March of 2000, a Reader’s Collection volume of the WaveDancers series was compiled and released by WaRP Graphics, over half of which contained Vickie’s work. Elf Quest information can be found at http://elfquest.com/
Vickie also began the ambitious task of writing her first novel in 1998. It would be the first piece to be written under her newly reclaimed maiden name, Vickie Holt. It is a full length novel based on Canadian sci-fi/fantasy television series, Forever Knight. Though the contract for the novel series was dropped by its publisher before Vickie’s manuscript could be scheduled, she and other authors in line for the series decided to publish the stories, fan-zine style. Over 200 copies of this story, “Vengeance Is Mine”, have been sold all over the U.S., Canada, Norway, England, Germany and Australia. In 2001, “Vengeance Is Mine” came to the attention of Dragonslair Studios in New Jersey, who adapted the novel to audio-play format, and have recorded it for CD and cassette release. The audio drama is recorded with a full cast of voices, sound effects and original music. The CDs can be purchased from Dragonslair Studios at http://www.dragons-lair-studios.com/ or by contacting Vickie directly. Dragonslair also included Vickie’s poem, “Color of Time” (previously published in online ‘zine, “Event Horizon”) on their “Whispers in the Dark" CD, which features poetry read by Victor Roscetti, affecting the voice of Forever Knight’s “Lacroix”.
Vickie took a couple of years off from writing to pursue an interest in the behind-the-scenes activities of rock music life. She worked with Roanoke rock band, O-X-3, until the band called it quits in late 2001. She also hosted Canadian Celtic-Rock band, Enter The Haggis, for their first stay and performance in Roanoke, January 2002. In 2003, the majority of Vickie’s writing was in the form of articles for local newspaper, The Vinton Messenger.
2005 was a very productive year. It began in February when Vickie had her first music related article published nationally in Blue Suede News magazine. The article explores British rock idol Tommy Steele’s ground breaking contributions to the history of rock music. A copy of the magazine can still be obtained by ordering the back issue (Winter 2004/05) from Blue Suede News http://www.bluesuedenews.com/ Shortly after this publication, Vickie researched and began writing a non-fiction manuscript that explores the reasons why the Harry Potter novel series by J.K. Rowling appeals so much to an older readership. She hopes to begin marketing this manuscript by mid-2008. Also in 2005, Vickie took her first steps into the world of writing screenplays. She has completed and is currently marketing a two-hour pilot script – as well as character mock-ups and story arcs for at least three seasons – for what she hopes will be a weekly, hour-long dramatic fantasy series based on J.M. Barrie’s original Peter Pan novel.
Vickie has also lent her editing talents to NyxComics of Toronto, Canada. She is credited as editor on the release of their project titled “Artemis Epsilon”, http://www.nyxcomics.com/ . During this time, Vickie also wrote and performed several short skits for Roanoke’s own No Shame Theater, which happens on the Waldron Stage of Mill Mountain Theater, Friday nights at 11:00pm. Her skit, “Mirror, Mirror” was chosen for a repeat performance in the fall of 2005 for the "Best of No Shame" show. She has also written, designed and produced a chap-book sized cookbook featuring original recipes, as well as a few passed down through family and borrowed from friends. It's called "Vickie's Traditional, Contemporary and Innovative Cookbook", and is available directly from Vickie.
Throughout the years since her first publication in 1993, Vickie has enjoyed the honor of appearing as a guest and workshop panelist at many Science Fiction conventions and other events including Rising Star, SheVaCon, Kaleidoscope, PhilCon, and The Roanoke Public Libraries Valley Book Festival. In April 2006, Vickie also appeared as a guest author at the Blue Ridge Visions Independent Film Festival.
Most recently, Vickie has completed and is currently marketing her new chapbook, "Cogs & Stardust". In the future, she hopes to put several more story ideas to paper, including an adventure based on the Stargate SG-1 television series, and an original novel focusing on a priest who learns the truth of man's existance.
